The Black Family Archives, An exploration of Memory Exercises and the Reimagined Photo Album, is a project that focuses on the celebration and reconciliation of family and stories via the use of archival photos. The work invites people to tap into memory to unearth stories as a way to build collective archives that express, showcase and document the full spectrum of the Black Experience.
How can I engage?
The project is participatory, in that it challenges how artists typically work with the public. The project encourages the community to remember family stories via a meditative slow looking and writing exercise that helps activate the archival photos. The impact of this exercise is to spark connectedness in our shared stories and experiences, then create an exhibition and photo album for the public to experience.
We are seeking 5 families to go on a journey of exploration. Click the application link below to apply. Families would be expected to work alongside artists and mental heatlh professionals to document and archive their family history.
